India Adds 6.6 GW of Renewable Energy in 5 Months Total Capacity Nearing 40 GW

Published: 9.22.2025

Gujarat has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing renewable energy hubs, adding 6,632 MW of new green power capacity between April and August 2025 pushing the state’s total installed renewable energy capacity to 39,275.7 MW, according to state energy department data.

The bulk of the growth came from solar power projects, which now account for about 22,806 MW, followed by wind energy at 14,235 MW. Smaller contributions came from large hydro (1,990 MW)small hydro (113 MW), and biopower (129.8 MW).

Analysts note that Gujarat’s performance in just five months matches the capacity it added in the entire previous fiscal year, underscoring the pace of its renewable energy buildout.

Officials attribute the surge to favorable government policies, the commissioning of large-scale solar parks and hybrid projects, and improvements in transmission infrastructure that allow faster grid integration. Also falling project costs and rising corporate demand for clean energy have also spurred momentum.

This rapid expansion reinforces India’s national goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Still, experts caution that sustained growth will require continued investment in grid stability, storage solutions, and land acquisition.

With nearly 40 GW of renewable capacity installedGujarat is now positioning itself as a leader not only in India but also in Asia’s clean energy transition.
