GlobalFoundries Acquires MIPS to Strengthen RISC-V and AI Capabilities

Published: 7.3.2025

GlobalFoundries (GF) has announced its acquisition of MIPS, a move aimed at boosting its design capabilities in RISC-V processor cores. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2025.

This acquisition will allow GlobalFoundries to integrate MIPS’ intellectual property into its growing portfolio of AI, automotive, and embedded computing solutions. The company plans to build out full-stack offerings, combining design IP and chip manufacturing under one roof.

“This expands our ability to deliver complete, differentiated solutions for fast-growing markets like AI and smart vehicles,” said Dr. Thomas Caulfield, CEO of GlobalFoundries.

Why It Matters

  • RISC-V is an open-source chip architecture gaining popularity as an alternative to ARM.
  • MIPS brings proven RISC-V design expertise, which GF can now pair with its U.S.-based manufacturing.
  • The move supports GF’s broader strategy to become a vertically integrated supplier in key sectors.

GlobalFoundries stock (NASDAQ: GFS) rose 6.5% following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s expanded capabilities.

The deal also aligns with broader industry trends toward domestic chip production and integrated solutions in response to rising global demand and supply chain pressures.
