Protecting Solar Supply Chains from Counterfeit Components with IBS Electronics

The global solar market is expanding at a record speed with new projects coming online, powered by demand for clean energy and lower installation costs. But this rapid growth exposes a weak spotsupply chain integrity.

To keep up with demand, some teams turn to cheaper components or unauthorized sources, resulting in a flood of counterfeit and substandard parts quietly making their way into solar installationsputting both safety and long-term system performance at risk.

UL has publicly warned about counterfeit UL marks on PV modules, showing how easily fake labels can slip through.

The impact is real, not hypothetical. Independent fieldwork from HelioVolta shows connector issues in the majority of inspected projects and in one commercial portfolio, a single connector failure contributed to a 58% revenue loss due to downtime and remediation. Connectors may be low cost, but when they overheat, they can take multimillion dollar assets offline.

Paperwork Isn’t Enough – Always Verify

It’s easy to assume that a part with the right certificate is safe. Unfortunately, paperwork can lie.

UL Solutions has issued public notices about counterfeit test reports with documents that look legitimate but contain fabricated data. When both components and certificates are compromised relying on paperwork alone creates a dangerous illusion of security. Field inspections remain the only way many issues are discovered.

Counterfeits also age poorly. They may work at first, but they tend to run hot, degrade faster, and fail early driving up O&M costs and driving down energy yield.

poor-quality connector can slowly cook itself (and nearby equipment) until it trips a shutdown. Counterfeits don’t just threaten immediate safety: they also undermine the long-term reliability and bankability of solar assets.

How to Keep Counterfeits Out of Your Solar Operations & BESS Operations

The fight against fake components isn’t new. Industries like aerospace defense have faced this challenge for decades and developed strict standards to deal with it. The solar industry can take a page from their playbook.

  • Ensure traceability. Buy parts with a clear chain of custody back to the OEM. Missing or murky provenance is a red flag.
  • Source through authorized channels first. Gray market bargains are a common onramp for counterfeits. Use authorized distributors or manufacturers directly whenever possible.
  • Inspect and test incoming parts. Check labels, packaging, and markings; sample test when feasible. Catching issues at the dock is far cheaper than fixing them in the field.
  • Segregate & quarantine suspects. Never commingle questionable stock with verified inventory. Hold, investigate, then disposition.
  • Document & report. Keep purchase/inspection records and report confirmed counterfeits via GIDEP to protect the wider industry.
  • Operate within certified systems. Standards like ISO 9001AS9120 (for distributors), and AS6081 (counterfeit avoidance practices) formalize supplier qualification, inspection, and traceability.
