GlobalFoundries to invest €1.1 billion to expand Dresden fab under “Project SPRINT”

GlobalFoundries confirmed plans to invest €1.1 billion in an expansion of its Dresden manufacturing campus to expand the site’s output to more than one million 300-mm wafers per year by the end of 2028.

The project, known as Project SPRINT, aims to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor supply chain and meet security standards for end-to-end chip production across automotive, industrial, and critical infrastructure sectors.
The expansion is expected to receive federal and Saxony state support under the European Chips Act, pending European Commission approval later this year. Reports suggest public funding could total several hundred million euros.
Dresden is already GlobalFoundries’ largest European site with over €10 billion invested since 2009, and will become one of Europe’s largest 300-mm wafer production hubs, enhancing regional capacity and offering on-shore alternatives to supply chains centered in Asia.
